Default What character would you recommend to start with??

Hi, I'm new to the game, matter of fact I haven't played it yet. Waiting on the next Beta Weekend April 15th. Been pondering and puzzeling and reading the heck out of Prima's Hint book that came with the demo. I know this prolly gets asked a 100 times lol...but anyways, I was wondering...

What character would you recommend to start playing with your first time in the game? What would ya recommend, both prim and sec??

I leaning towards a Monk/Warrior like the hint book suggests.

My other choices would be a Ranger/monk, or Ranger/messemer. Maybe even and elementalist/monk

Just wanted to hear your opinions. I'm also thinking of doing a pure healer, just because I believe I would enjoy that. Our squad, NBK, plays alot of first person shooter games (Joint Ops, Delta Force2, Americas Army) and a little of RPGs (Diablo 2, and now GW.) But in Joint Ops and Black Hawk Down you can have the option of the medic that heals and revives other players. And I love that responsiblity. Which means ya sometimes have to sacrifice your kill/death ratio in order to reach that downed teamate. So summin up the last question, is a pure healer worth making???

Thanks for your input...

The warrior, ranger and elementalist classes all include skills easy to manage. I wouldn't recommend a primary monk to any newbeginner, since it can require somewhat high experience, but you can't go wrong adding it as a secondary to any of the classes i mentioned above. (This is for PvE. PvP characters is another story)

Yes, they are the profession most looked for to add to a team. However, with that comes VERY high expectations.
If you are starting as a Monk, make it clear to your team how much experience you have at playing one. It will help keep expectations in line.

I usually play healers in all games, so Im going to start with a Warrior/Monk combo, not sure what the wife will start with. She is the type that just likes to hack things down, so I can see her most likely been a warrior. She doesnt like to have to press to many buttons...hehe

When I get the hang of the game, I may just go Monk all the way, not sure yet as I have never played, so this BWE will be more of a getting to know the classes run for me.

Why not just pick a class and see how you play. If you find your self rushing into fights with sword drawn, then go for a warrior/something. If you find yourself standing back and wearing down the target with ranged attacks, go for a magic user or a ranger. If you find yourself doing both go for a ranger class. It all comes down to how you play the game. Find a "you" character.

If you're looking to just jump right in, I'm partial to the Warrior/Monk. The stronger armor lets you take more beatings, and you can help yourself with a little healing, too.

With this combo you won't be able to heal others much because of the lack of energy.
Since your wife will likely be a warrior, I suggest you to play as a monk/whatever, as you can team up with her from the very beginning.

If I was starting out I would go for a Wa/Mo , if I liked beating things to a pulp, or El/Mo, if I liked frying/freezing/electrifying/battering things to a fine pulp!

The Mo secondary comes in handy since you can heal and res at key moments!

As primary profession, you might want to pick a straightforward class: warrior (hack, slash, bash, whatever), elementalist (crisp, zap, freeze...) or ranger (make small holes in your opponents, play with your pet). All of them have specific strengths and weaknesses. If you're playing in missions, you can't be wrong anyway, just choose whatever suits your playstyle/taste best.

As secondary, pick monk and look no further. You won't be the main healer, but you can take some heat off the group. In early levels, use 'Healing Hands' as you elite skills until you find a better one.

These combinations are both easy to play and flexible. Self sufficient enough to play in random groups even if there is not a good monk. When you feel more comfortable with the game, you can pick more complex skills and professions.

Ah... was about to say something about needing two preorders, but you get a friend's key, so you can both play together on the beta weekend...

The only other thing I'll point out is the need for two games once the game is released (needing two accounts to play together).

I'd agree that Warrior, Ranger, or Ele isn't hard; I think a mesmer (the simple damage-over-time kind, NOT the disrupting kind) can be easy too.

Monk makes a great secondary; can't remember how many times my group has said "we need a monk just for the rez". Doesn't matter too much how good you are if that's all you're looking for.

Healing can be tough, but it's really easy to find a group too. If you ever have trouble getting into groups, try inviting random people; there's been plenty of times when I see three groups forming, and twenty people standing around trying to get into a group; starting a group at a time like that is perfect and easy.

Yup, know about the 2 copies of the game. Just preordered the one, and will use the buddy key so we can both play and try it out. I will definately keep on playing, Im sure the wife will aswell but just going to get the one copy for now instead of getting 2 then the wife saying she doesnt want to play and have another copy lying around.

Though I could maybe 2 box, but no idea how that will work in GW though. Would rather have the wife around

Ok thanks guys. That really summed it up for me.

I'ma go with a Ranger/Monk. Then maybe either a Ranger/Mess or a Element/Monk.

Alot of my squad's RPG experiance comes from Diablo 2. Building sorcs or hammerdins that cause major damage to mass groups. Not the case in GW, lol ya just can't do that here, but they will want to play alot of damage dealing characters. Warriors, Elms, ect. So I will prolly take up the responsablity of the primary healer on my squad when the game offically comes out. Thanks for your imput.

Try whatever you think is the coolest. Disregard everything else.

If you like monks, don't let a slightly steeper learning curve discourage you!

(Ranger/ Mesmer is my personal favourite though)

Try Mo/Nec or Nec/Mo. The Blood Magic-line has some nice healing abilities that require sacrifices
